THE DARKEST HOUR (Cry of an angel)
Season 1
Episode 1
...
The gentle wind of the evening
weather blew a hip of refuse
randomly in the air. It was rush
hour time: vehicles, people and other
land locomotive technology moved
to and fro on the road causing an
unbearable hullabaloo. At the same
time, hawkers joined them
advertising and making sales for a
living. One of them who carried a
tray of plantain rushed a vehicle in
motion. She wore a jean trouser
which she folded at it's cross
sectional area and a brown top
which she also tied at it's base in a
way her abdomen was slightly
visible. She wasn't slim and short
neither was she fat nor tall. She was
a girl in her late 20s. On her feet
were correct old canvas that enabled
her pursue moving vehicles. As she
ran, her buttocks kept bouncing until
she stopped by the side of a
customer in a driver seat who
whined down the front glass of his
car gazing at the plantains.
"How much are these?"
"Four hundred naira per square, sir"
Monica, the girl responded.
"No, it's costly" the driver wanted to
whine up the glass.
"Alright, let's bargain" Monica never
gave up.
"Two hundred"
"Three fifty"
"Two fifty"
"Okay, bring three hundred and
forty-five naira, sir"
Hearing that, the driver smiled
causing a smile on Monica's face too.
"Alright, give me the remaining three
squares for three hundred naira
each" he concluded.
Monica sold her remaining plantain
happily then waved at the driver
before crossing the road to meet her
twin sister Udoka who was sitting
sadly in front of an empty shop with
her empty tray of plantain too. She
looks exactly like her sister except
that she was wearing a short jean
trouser and a black top.
"Udoka, let's go home, I've sold the
remaining plantain" Monica
approached happily but Udoka
showed no sign of happiness. "Are
you okay? You look sad" she added
yet, Udoka didn't say a word rather
began to stand up. She stood
simultaneously with her tray and
said, "Listen Monica, I'm tired of
being a hawker. I'm not coming
back here again in the name of
selling plantain. My mates are in the
university and I'm here.." she hissed
and walked out shaking her butt
involuntarily without allowing her
sister say a word. Though Monica
couldn't say anything rather stared
at her until she walked out.
"Udoka, wait for me nah!" she
shouted and ran after her.
**
The resident of these twins has a
small gate, and inside the compound
was a long horizontal building
having seven rooms. Though it isn't
a story building but made in a way it
was higher than the ground. Before
one enters each room, he/she has to
climb four stairs. They were tenants
in other rooms but none was seen
outside except Trust and Sunday
popularly known as Sunny. These
two sat on a long bench in a way
they faced each other playing puzzle
(Draft). They wore longsleeve shirts
without bucklling it up. Suddenly,
Udoka banged the small metal gate
opened thereby startling them. Even
their puzzle-rings disorganized.
"My God!" Trust exclaimed wanting
to fall.
"Bia, Monica or are you Udoka"
Sunny began. "Have you lost your
manners or did you sell it away with
your plantain?!" he asked glaring at
her.
Udoka didn't even stop, she glanced
at them while still in motion and
eventually entered into their own
apartment.
"My friend, her name is Udoka not
Monica" Trust corrected and sat up.
"But she behaves contrary to her
name" Sunny faced Trust seriously.
"How?"
"The girl suppose to be peaceful
because her name means 'Peace is
Greater' but she's so troublesome!"
"That's how it should be"
"What?" Sunny stared at him. "Don't
you know that someone's name
should have a psychological effect
on one's life? Chai..! No wonder!"
"No wonder what?" Trust also stared
at him.
"It's because your name doesn't
tarry with your character too"
"How?"
"Is your name not Trust?"
"It is"
"How many times have you
betrayed me after trusting you?"
"Guy, leave that thing" Trust waved
it off. Just then, Monica entered, she
slowed down and greeted them
with a smile.
"Welcome my dear Monica" Trust
replied looking at her with his teeth
widely opened but Sunny hit his leg
hardly.
"Who's your dear?" he whispered
angrily then looked at Monica. "My
love.. sorry.. my dear, welcome" he
said opening his teeth too.
"What has come over both of you
today?" Monica asked with hands on
her waist.
"Your beauty has come over me, for
that, i can do anything for you"
Sunny replied.
"Oya, i need 10k now" Monica
stretched a hand forward while the
other remained on her waist.
Hearing the amount 10k, Sunny
focused on his game and began to
whistle then Monica laughed and
entered into the house. Even Trust
couldn't help it too.
"This gir's behaviour tarry with her
name oh" Trust said.
"I'm not surprise" Sunny began
without looking up. "Her name
means 'Money is Greater' and that's
why she loves money a lot"
"I thought you like it when
someone's behaviour tarry with her
name"
"Not on money matter oh" Sunny
concluded and Trust laughed
seriously..

Mrs Williams, the twins' mother sat
on the edge of a family bed inside
the house when her children entered
with their tray of plantain. She wore
a milky gown and tied a loosed
wrapper above it. She was a bit fat
and had an old look. The room
contains the bed, a long cushion
opposite it, an old refrigerator, stove,
clean pots, bags and other materials
since it was one room apartment.
Udoka angrily dropped her tray on
the floor and sat on the long
cushion. While Monica gently kept
hers and sat beside her mother on
the bed. Mrs Williams noticed that
something was wrong, so she
adjusted her wrapper, looked at her
children and said, "You sold all the
plantains but you're not looking
happy, especially you Udoka. What's
the problem?"
None of the girls replied rather
Monica folded her hands and looked
at Udoka who placed a hand on her
cheek without smiling.
"Answer me!" the mother shrieked.
"Did anybody steal your money?"
"No, mother" Monica replied.
"Then what?"
"It's Udoka, she said she won't hawk
plantain anymore"
"Why?" the mother looked at Udoka
who disengaged her hand from her
cheek instantly.
"Mother, that's what i said oh! And
I'm not going back to my words!"
she said.
"Why my daughter?" the mother
brought down her voice.
"I want to go to school. Moreover,
I'm tired!"
Hearing that, Mrs Williams wore a
sorrowful face remembering her late
husband. Monica noticed it instantly
then felt her emotions.
"My daughter" Mrs Williams began
looking at Udoka. "I don't have
money yet to send both of you to
school and you know we eat from
the small sales we make from the
plantains. Biko nwam.."
"Like i said, I'm not going back to
my words oh!" Udoka stood up to
take a cup of water.
The mother remained quiet staring
at her as the water poured down
into her stomach through her gullet.
"Mother, this is my today's sales"
Monica's voice brought back her
attention. She looked at her and
collected a money from her.
**
THE NEXT MORNING.
Sunny came out from his room
with a chewing stick in his mouth.
He tied a wrapper across his waist,
and a white singlet could be seen on
his body. Immediately, he climbed
down his stairs, he saw Udoka
sitting on a small stool in front of
their room. So he removed the stick
from his mouth, spat out particles of
it, looked into the sky and said,
"God, why must you allow this girl
to be the first person i see this
morning? For that reason, I'm going
back to bed" he turned to go.
When Udoka heard him, she glared
at him and said. "Oga Sunny, hope
you're not referring to me"
Sunny turned. "Who else except
you?!" he asked.
"Meaning?"
"Meaning you're trouble itself. So,
you, being the first person i see this
morning means I'll encounter
trouble throughout today"
"Not only trouble, even badluck"
Udoka hissed.
"That means you're also a badluck"
Sunny matched forward a bit.
"I took after your father who's the
oracle of badluck"
"Chei...!!" Sunny exclaimed.
Hearing them, Mrs Williams came
out. "Bia, this girl, what's it this
morning?"
"Mother, he started it oh"
"Sunny, what?" Mrs Williams looked
at Sunday.
Just then, Monica came out with a
tray of plantain on her head, yet
glowing in beauty. "Oga Sunny,
you're quarreling with my sister
again" she said smiling. "It seems
like both of you will fit in marriage
oh" she laughed climbing down the
stairs while Udoka disdained her.
"My dear Monica" Sunny began. "If i
dream of it, after i wake up, I'll fast
for 40 days" he said thereby making
Monica laugh the more, even Udoka
smiled. Therefore the whole thing
looked like a joke. Then Mrs Williams
entered inside the house.
"Udoka, follow ur sister!" her voice
echoed.
**
1:15am AT NIGHT
Mrs Williams laid with her daughters
on the family bed. All covered up
with wrappers. The room was dim
due to th light from a hurricane lamp
which was gradually going off due
to insufficient kerosene. Suddenly,
Monica's whole body began to
move. She was actually dreaming.
:
DREAM
Monica found herself on an
unknown land. Bushes and darkness
covered everywhere. She stood at
the middle of it observing things. As
she stood, a very narrow bright ray
of light began shine from the ground
at a distant. So she moved forward
to know why and where the light
came from. As she moved, she saw
a man by the side who said, "It is
the secret of the unknown"
"What do you mean?" Monica asked
only to find out that she asked the
question physically..
:
REALITY
"What do you mean?" she repeated
the question moving her legs but
finally woke up. She glanced all over
the room, her mother and sister
who were still sleeping then gently
covered herself and went back to
sleep.
**
8:50am
It was Saturday, so there was no
hawking of plantain as instructed by
Mrs Williams who had gone out
very early that day to buy food
stuffs against the next day which
was Sunday. Monica sat on the edge
of the bed thinking about her dream.
As she thought, Udoka entered with
a soap and detergent in her hand..

Udoka paused when she saw
Monica's mood to be dull but
suddenly moved to her bag to bring
out dirty clothes. One could see her
round butt in a bomshort and also
the shape of her pant as she bent
down. "What are you thinking
about?" she asked selecting the
clothes without standing straight or
looking back at her sister.
Monica exhaled on the edge of the
bed and said, "I had a disturbing
dream last night"
"Nightmare?"
"No"
"So what's it all about?" Udoka asked
still without looking back.
"Hum.. It was more like a reality. I
can't really tell" Monica untied a
wrapper she covered her body with.
One could also see her in a
bomshort and top. Her nipples were
seen clearly through it.
"I'm listening" Udoka's voice
sounded.
"I saw myself in a dark bush"
Monica began. "And in a short while,
i saw a bright light coming out from
the ground. As i wanted to go check
what it was, a man told me that it's a
secret of the unknown"
Udoka turned in a way she faced her
sister with clothes in her hands. "Did
you see the face of the man?" she
asked.
"Hum.. No" Monica replied while
Udoka headed to the door without
saying anything. "Well, won't you
say something?"
"What do you want me to say other
than your dream is as a result of
maleria" Udoka replied then Monica
smiled coz she knew her sister to be
like that.
:
10:30am
As Monica was taking her breakfast
sitting on the long cushion, so as
Udoka was dressing up. After she
was done, she went to her bag and
picked a file containing her O-level
criteria.
"Where are you going to?" Monica
asked her.
"To look for a job" she replied.
"A job? Without telling mother?"
"I will tell her"
"What type of job?"
"Any type apart from hawking a
plantain" Udoka walked to the door
and eventually went out.
**
In a cyber caffe were young people
operating computers while some
stood or sat beside the operators.
There was a long table divided in
shelves where the computers were
placed. Each operator sat in each of
them. And among them was David
who held a paper in his hand staring
at the computer screen with all
enthusiasm. His caved punk
hairstyle looked smart giving him an
admirable handsomeness. He wore
a red jacket that had a zip from it's
base to the collar region. Suddenly,
Udoka entered through the door
wearing a black elastic tight gown
that stopped before her knees, so
she dragged it downward. She
didn't know who to talk to about her
job request coz the place seemed
strange to her.
"Hey, how can we be of help?" a
male voice asked her then many
boys looked at her, even David.
Udoka's eyes caught with his' and
many other boys which whipped
out words from her mouth.
"Hum.. I'm.. i.. i want to see the
manager" she stammered.
"Over here!" the manger shouted
from inner part of the room. David
glanced at Udoka again as she
walked to the manager..
**
Back to the resident of Mrs Williams,
Monica had told her mother about
her sister's way about when she
came back.
"That girl.. well, let's see the news
she'll come back with" the mother
said bringing out food stuffs from
the bag she came back with sitting
on the bed while Monica on the
cushion. Silence took over. Mrs
Williams saw her daughter deep in
thought so she asked, "What
troubles you, Monica?"
"Mother, why have you refused to
take us to our father's village?"
Monica questioned but the mother
kept quiet. "For the fact that we
barely know our father, why can't
we know his land and interact with
his relatives, our uncles?!"
"Of course i have told you the name
of the village" the mother replied.
"Yes, but you've refused to take us
there. Why?"
"Monica, don't disturb me"
"Mother, are you hiding something
from us?"
Hearing that, Mrs Williams stared at
her daughter but never said a word.
"We are adults now, mother. And i
had a dream last night" Monica
added.
"What dream?" the mother asked...
**
Udoka began to walk out of the
cyber caffe happily coz she had
officially been offered a service job.
But she stopped at the door listening
to two girls discussing about their
father's village. Since she knew
nothing about her own father's land,
she became jealous. "Mother has
always refused to take us to our
father's village" she thought.
"You block the exit" a male voice
came from behind thereby bringing
her back to senses-that was David.
"I'm sorry" Udoka gave way for
him.
"Are you okay?" David wanted to
know.
"I'm fine, thank you" Udoka began
walk towards the door while David
followed her.
"I didn't mean to upset you"
"I'm not upset"
"Well, have a nice day" David
concluded but Udoka said nothing.
She stood by the road waiting for a
cab while David walked down. He
sometimes glanced back to behold
her beauty which Udoka also
noticed.
**
Immediately Monica finished telling
her mother about her dream, Udoka
bagged in. She dropped her file
forcefully and sat beside her sister.
"Udoka, what?"
"Mother, tell us why u don't want to
take us to our father's land" Udoka
told her mother angrily..

Mrs Williams became surprise to
hear Udoka demanding to know
what Monica had also been asking
her. Even Monica looked at her sister
surprisingly for having the same
question in mind. So their mother
tried to ignore the question and said
to Udoka, "I heard you went to look
for a job"
"Mother, that's not what i said you
should tell us. I said tell us why we
have not been to our father's land
for twenty good years!" Udoka said
with all seriousness. She crossed her
legs and folded her hands putting
her face away from her mother.
"Mother, please, tell us" Monica's
voice was calmed and melodious as
she stared at her mother in the eyes.
Mrs Williams knew she couldn't
withheld the truth from them
anymore coz they had come of age,
she bent her head sorrowfully and
began. "Williams your father was
the only man i ever knew and loved
years ago. With the small he had, he
married me to his land, Ndigoro.
The land has a tradition that states:
no man with twins enters a
particular forest called The Dark
Forest. It was believed that the forest
contains the secret success of the
land and any man whose wife bears
twins doesn't enter there.."
Listening to Mrs Williams, Monica
glanced at her sister remembering
her dreams.
The mother continued, "By then i
had given birth to both of you. But
one day, your father began to have
feelings and strange dreams about
the forest which i think you have
started having too" she looked at
Monica in tears and continued. "Your
father wanted to know more about
the forest to satisfy his curiosity by
entering it but he was caught and
killed. They sent us away from the
land never to return or have
anything to do with my husband's
family who also supported that we
leave because they never wanted
me to marry your father.."" she
paused drying her tears with a
wrapper. Tears could also be seen
on the childrens' eyes especially
Monica's.
"So, what you are saying is that i will
never step feet into my father's land"
Udoka said but the mother remained
quiet.
"Is the tradition still real?" Monica
began. "I mean does it still in
existence coz i must get to that
forest too"
"Shut up your mouth!!" the mother
rebuked her aggressively. Monica
startled at the tune of her voice with
a frowned face and rested on the
back-rest of the cushion. "If i hear
that from you again I'll make sure i
squeeze out your mouth!" the
mother added.
Suddenly, a hard knock came from
the door three times and all stared at
the direction...
**
David got to their house with the
paper. He met his father in the
sittingroom then handed the paper
to him. Mr Robinson, the father
collected it and began to scan
through them one by one. He was
on a black plain trouser and singlet.
On his feet were black stockings. He
could be regarded as a rich man coz
he had a good house, a car, wife
and two children-David and
Ugonma the younger sister who
had the same age with Monica and
her twin. But she was in the
university.
"Alright.." Mr Robinson kept those
papers on the centre table before
him. He looked at David and said,
"When is your school calling off the
strike?"
"I don't know, dad" David replied.
"Alright, go to my room, you'll see a
notebook, pick it up, type everything
inside it into your system then go
back to the cyber caffe on Monday
and print them out"
"Yes, dad" David did as he said.
Immediately he entered his room,
open his laptop, he remember the
girl he met at the Caffe-Udoka.
**
Mrs Williams had a clue who the
person knocking at the door was, so
her heart sank into her stomach.
Udoka noticed it and was wise
enough to know it was their
Landlord. As the mother wanted to
stand up to open the door, she said,
"Sit down mother, let me get it" she
walked and opened the door to
behold the Landlord standing with a
file.
"Good day sir"
"Is your mother in?"
"Yes, I'm here! Good day sir!" Mrs
Williams' voice sounded from inside.
"Good day, madam!" the Landlord
replied. Monica opened the door
widely for him to enter but he didn't
rather gave her a paper to pass to
her mother. "Alright, have a nice
day" he concluded and walked out.
Udoka gave her mother the paper
then went back to her initial position.
Silence took over as the mother read
her house bill and date to pay it. She
didn't want her daughters to worry
about it, so she folded it and said,
"Okay, it's nothing." But the children
stared at her silently.
"I've gotten a job at a cyber caffe"
Udoka said. "And will be paid 15
thousand naira each month" she
added.
"Really?"
"Yes"
"That's good. When are u starting?"
"On Monday"
"Alright" the mother struggled up.
**
MONDAY
Throughout the weekend, Udoka
had been thinking on how she'll
cope with her job. As she thought,
the short conversation she had with
David flashed into her mind.
On the other hand, David hopped to
see her again at the caffe. So as he
was dressing to go, so as Udoka
was already on her way there..

AT THE CYBER CAFE
Only Udoka was found there with
two other male workers who got to
know her but went out immediately
to have a breakfast leaving her all
alone. As she dusted out dirt from
computers, David entered. He wore
the same red jacket, so Udoka was
able to recognise him. When he saw
her, he smiled in a away that shows:
MY PRAYER HAS BEEN ANSWERED
YES!
"Good morning" Udoka greeted him.
"Morning" David kept smiling.
Though Udoka noticed it but didn't
bother to ask why he was smiling.
"How can i help you?" She asked as
she kept a piece of rag without
looking at him.
"I want to make several print-out
from my system using your
machine"
"Each page is thirty naira"
"Sure.." David handed his laptop to
her. Yet, Udoka didn't look at him
but her face was bright enough to
keep a customer. She sat down,
connected the laptop to a printer and
said. "Have a seat"
David sat close to her admiring her
beauty from the side of her face
down to her thighs which exposed
slightly. Nothing could be heard
except the sound of the printer that
was printing out hard copies.
"You know your job" David broke
the silence.
"Thanks" Udoka replied.
"Where did you learn how to
operate computer?"
"From high school"
"Interesting" both remained quiet.
David could see her staring at the
laptop screen with all enthusiasm, so
he said, "Put a smile on your face"
"Excuse me?" Udoka looked at him.
"I said.. you.. i mean.. you should
smile sometimes"
"Why?"
"Coz it gives guys like me courage to
express our feelings to girls"
Hearing that, Udoka smiled not
because David said so but because
she found his statement funny. She
became a bit shy and averted her
eyes from him.
"I'm sorry for what happened on
Saturday" David said.
"What happened?" Udoka looked at
him again.
"Don't you remember me?"
"I do but you did nothing wrong"
"Maybe i tried to interfere into your
personal issues which made you
forget yourself"
Hearing that, Udoka remembered
her father's land which was the
reason why she was lost in thought
that day, so she frowned her face
and focused on the laptop. "Yes, u
inferred" she said.
"Do u want to talk about it?"
"No, and i want this conversation to
stop" Udoka concluded. None of
them said anything again until the
work was done. She gathered the
printed papers and handed them to
David. As she was receiving her
money, David said, "I'm David
Robinson"
"Udoka Williams" she replied.
"Have a nice day" David began to
walk out while Udoka stared at him
until she couldn't see him again.
**
6:00pm
There was nobody at home when
Udoka returned. She walked straight
to their cooking pot but found no
food there. So she sat on the edge of
the bed feeling hungry. "What type
of life is this?" she thought and laid
on the bed face-up in a way one
could see the shape of her full
breasts. Suddenly, Monica entered
with a small bag.
"Where have u been? And where is
mother?" Udoka sat up.
"I went to hawk plantain, and i don't
know where mother is" Monica
replied and handed the bag to her
sister. "It's a snack. U can eat it while
i prepare something" she said.
"Thanks" Udoka collected it and
began to eat while Monica turned to
their stove.
However, Udoka had stopped eating
staring at a spot. She remembered
David's words and began to smile
without knowing that her sister had
been looking at her.
"What?" Monica asked her.
"What what?" Udoka returned the
question after realising herself.
"I saw you smiling"
"Was i smiling?"
"No, u were crying" Monica placed
her hands on her waist with a
smiling face but Udoka remained
quiet smiling too. As girls, they had
the same thing in mind but Monica
didn't want to dig into it, so she said,
"How was your first day at work?"
"Fine, there were many customers"
Udoka replied.
"Are they the reason why u were
smiling?"
"Why are you so interested to know
why i was smiling? Fine, it's because
someone told me that when girls
smile it gives men courage to
express their feelings to them. I find
it funny that's why i smiled"
"Oh my God!" Monica exclaimed
turning around immediately.
"What?"
"I don't like where this is going" she
replied then Udoka laughed
seriously.
Just at the door, Monica felt her eyes
closed and legs weak. Therefore, she
fell down on the floor.
"Monica!" Udoka rushed her. "What's
happening to u? Monica!" she
shouted but Monica's eyes were still
close in vision-she saw herself in the
Dark Forest again and the bright light
becoming brighter.. As Udoka
wanted to cry, her eyes opened.
"What happened?"
"I should be asking you coz u fell
down"
"My head aches" Monica struggled
up to the bed with the help of her
sister...
**
David gazed at the ceiling from his
bed thinking about Udoka. "I guess
she's troubled" he though. Just then,
his phone ran and he picked it
instantly.
"Hi, Dave" a female voice sounded
on the phone.
"Hi, Sandra" David replied.
"U've not called me for two day.
Why? I guess a girl is catching ur
attention"
"No, dear" David smiled...
